Un an avant sa mort, Franz Kafka a eu une expérience très inhabituelle. En se promenant dans le parc steglitz à Berlin, il a trouvé une fille qui pleurait le cœur brisé : elle avait perdu sa poupée. Kafka a offert d'aider à chercher la poupée et de la rencontrer le lendemain au même endroit. Incapable de trouver la poupée, il a composé une lettre "écrite" par la poupée et l'a lue quand ils se sont rencontrés à nouveau :

- " S'il vous plaît, ne pleurez pas, je suis partie en voyage pour voir le monde. Je vais vous écrire à propos de mes aventures... "

C'était le début de beaucoup de lettres. Quand lui et la fille se sont croisés de nouveau, il a lu ces lettres soigneusement composées d'aventures imaginaires à propos de la poupée bien-aimée. La fille a été rassurée. Quand les rencontres arrivèrent à leur fin, Kafka lui a donné une poupée. Elle avait l'air différente de la poupée originale. Une lettre jointe explique :

-" mes voyages... m'ont changée... "

De nombreuses années plus tard, la fille, adulte, a trouvé une lettre cachée dans une fissure, à l'intérieur du poignet de la poupée. En bref, elle disait:

" Ce que tu aimes est très susceptible d'être perdu, mais un jour, l'amour reviendra d'une manière différente."
